ROHS
What is RoHS?
The European Union’s RoHS Directive stands for “the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment”. This Directive bans the placing on the EU market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium, as well as flame retardants polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE).
On 4 June 2015, the EU commission published a new Directive (EU) 2015/863 to amend Annex II to EU RoHS 2 (Directive 2011/65/EU) to add the following 4 phthalates onto the list of restricted substances.
- Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): max 0.1%;
- Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP): max 0.1%;
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): max 0.1%;
- Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP): max 0.1%.
DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP are primarily used as plasticizers to soften plastics. As of 22 July 2019, they are restricted for all electrical and electronic equipment.
10 hazardous substances are now restricted in EEE under EU RoHS 3.
Manufacturers will need to understand the requirements of the RoHS Directive to ensure that their products, and their components, comply. RoHS compliance will be managed by the individual EU country governments.
Katun’s RoHS Policy
Katun offers electrical and electronic equipment that qualifies under the RoHS directive in two out of eleven categories. These two categories are:
- IT and telecommunications equipment
- Electrical and electronic tools
Katun proactively works with its suppliers which provide products in these two categories through a formal program requiring the supplier to confirm its compliance with the RoHS Directive. Although Katun does not manufacture these products, we feel it is in the best interest of our customers to proactively ensure the products we offer meet RoHS requirements. This process ensures that Katun is compliant with the RoHS Directive. For more information on Katun’s RoHS program please contact your Katun office (see www.Katun.com).
